Case Competitions, Sales Simulations and Perfect Pitches
Cal Poly sales and marketing students continued to shine on a national stage in 2021.
Several members of Cal Poly’s American Marketing Association (AMA) club participated in the AMA Collegiate Case Competition this spring and collected many notable achievements. Senior Sophia Luna (above left) was a finalist for the Perfect Pitch Competition. Meanwhile, OCOB students finished fourth place in the Marketplace Simulation Competition and were semi-finalists for the Case Competition. Cal Poly was also recognized as being one of the top 25 AMA chapters nationally.
In additional achievements, Cal Poly students competed in a field of more than 130 top sales students from 68 universities across the U.S. and Canada during the 23rd annual National Collegiate Sales Competition. The virtual event featured students putting their skills to the test in team-based and one-on-one sales call simulations. Cal Poly students Samuel Lopez (above middle) and Rose Tuttle (above right) both made it into the quarter finals. Lopez also went on to compete in the semi-finals (top 16). These successes led to Cal Poly finishing ninth overall in the event. Cal Poly has now finished in the top 10 for the past two years.
“Due to Cal Poly’s connections, I felt very prepared because established salesmen had given me feedback and tips.”
“Representing Cal Poly at the National Collegiate Sales Competition with Sam was an honor,” says Tuttle. “My main goal was to make Cal Poly proud because this school has given me so much. To prepare, Sam and I were connected with past guest lecturers and industry partners from the sales minor program who helped us with role play practice. Due to Cal Poly’s connections, I felt very prepared because established salesmen had given me feedback and tips. I also think that professor Danielle Epstein, my winter quarter sales professor, was the main reason I made it to the quarter finals. It was her support during many Zoom meetings and her love of sales that gave me the tools to compete.”
